The Bhutanese Public Health Engineering Division has embarked on a mission to achieve, by 2018, the Millennium Development Goal for improved sanitation and hygiene in rural Bhutan. To date, WASH in health care facilities has been largely neglected in programme planning and water and sanitation-related infectious diseases account for almost 30 % of health problems reported in rural areas. Improving water and sanitation services to decrease this incidence has now been set as a priority of the Ministry of Health.

In 2015, a scoping study of WASH in 35 health care facilities was conducted in three priority districts (Mongar, Samtse and Samdrup Jonkhar). The study sought to examine the status of WASH in health care facilities, to describe existing monitoring initiatives, identify gaps in the evidence base, and looks at policies and regulations.

Key problems highlighted include poor water quality and quantity in facilities, with all facilities using unimproved water sources. Water quality became poorer for facilities further away from the district health office.
