A set of slides detailing the preliminary findings of the cost of meeting basic WASH standards in health care facilities. Note, the data in these slides should not be cited.

This booklet highlights some of the progress made over the year, featuring 35 organizations (the “Trailblazers”) who continue to be committed to improving WASH in health care facilities. With such a strong response to the first edition, Global Water 2020 published a second edition to correspond to the publication of the Global Progress Report.

This global progress report on WASH in health care facilities comes at an unprecedented moment, when coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is exposing key vulnerabilities in health systems, such as inadequate infection prevention and control. WASH services in health care facilities, so often taken for granted – or as this report highlights, outright neglected – are needed more than ever to protect vulnerable health workers and patients. The WASH FIT training package has been completely revised and updated. The complete package is available to download here which includes seven modules and supplementary materials: Introduction to WASH in HCF and links with health WASH FIT Methodology Five technical modules: Water; Sanitation; Health care waste management; Hand hygiene; Environmental cleaning & disinfection. You are encouraged to modify and adapt the slides as you need, e.g. changing photos or text to make them more relevant to your setting. If you have any questions or comments on the training materials, please get in touch washinhcf@who.int. WASH FIT & COVID-19: This training package was developed before the outbreak of COVID-19. A short summary of the most relevant technical guidance for WASH & COVID-19 have subsequently been included in each technical module. A shortened version of the WASH FIT assessment tool to use where a rapid evaluation of services is needed is also available on Kobo Toolbox. It is available in English, French, Spanish and Arabic.

Funding WASH in healthcare facilities is a ‘no-regrets’ investment; WASH services are necessary in order to achieve a range of healthcare priorities including disease prevention, quality care, pandemic preparedness, effective health systems, and healthier and more productive communities.
